Ý niệm về cơ hội và
thách thức trong thời đại mới
GSTS.
do), equality (bình đẳng), human rights (nhân quyền), democracy
A -
mạnh về chân lý như sau: “The truth is far more powerful than
any weapon of mass destruction”.
“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”.
many causes that I am prepared to die for but no causes that I
am prepared to kill for”.

A - Chiến tranh, khủng bố và hòa bình
tôn giáo nào hay tự do chuyễn đổi tín ngưỡng, tôn giáo mà họ
dã man v.v…
Do đó mà
6. TỔNG
GIÁO HỘI PHẬT GIÁO VIỆT NAM
Trên phương
diện quốc tế đã có GIÁO HỘI TĂNG GIÀ PHẬT GIÁO THẾ GIỚI do tăng
sĩ lãnh đạo.
GIÁO HỘI
LIÊN HỮU PHẬT GIÁO THẾ GIỚI do cư sĩ lãnh đạo.
9. NHỮNG
ĐẠI HỌC PHẬT GIÁO và HỆ THỐNG TRUNG TIỂU HỌC BỒ ĐỀ
A. Thành lập ủy ban
Cả hai phải tự do cạnh tranh với
môn So Sánh các Tôn Giáo v.v…
Do đó
Nan!
nhân loại chắc chắn, vĩnh viễn sống trong hòa hợp, hòa bình, an
vui hạnh phúc.

CONCEPTS
CONCERNING OPPORTUNITIES
AND CHALLENGES FOR BUDDHISM IN THE NEW ERA
By
Nhu-Tang Lam Ph.D
After 30 years
living in a Western Society, I often hear people talking about
harmony, multiculture, freedom, equality, human rights,
democracy and plurality. In recent years, people are talking
about globalization.
However I rarely
hear people talking about compassion and tolerance.
In the present time,
terrorism, wars, ethnic discrimination, religious discrimination
and the destruction of the environment have become increasingly,
difficult to resolve.
From the perspective
of a Vietnamese Buddhist who has lived for long periods of time
in Japan and Australia, these are my opinions on the subject of
“OPPORTUNITIES and CHALLENGES for BUDDHISM in THE NEW ERA” .
I- NONVIOLENT
RESISTANCE
A-MAHATMA
GANDHI (1869 – 1948)
Talking about
Mahatma Gandhi, we need to understand his non-violent
resistance, harmonious life and tolerant spirit.
His way, non-violent
resistance for independence and freedom of India was a success.
From 1893 to 1914,
Gandhi struggled for human rights in South Africa.
From 1916 to 1945 He
struggled for the independence and freedom of India from the
imperialism of Great Britain.
Gandhi and family
were Hindus followers. However He also confirmed that He was a
Buddhist too.
The effect of
Buddhism in his thoughts and actions were resounding and
reflected in his life.
Gandhi always
emphasizes about the truth that: “The truth is far more powerful
than any weapon of mass destruction”. Through the incidents that
have occurred and actively continuing in the world and Gandhi’s
activities, we know that what He said is completely true and
correct.
The truth is the
superpower. There is no weapon which can destroys it.
He also said: “An
eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”. If violence is
responded with “an eye for an eye” and “a tooth for a tooth”,
so that the whole world will become blind. This planet will
become the hell.
With the non-violent
resistance, He said: “There are many causes that I am prepared
to die for but no causes that I am prepared to kill for”. This
is the Bodhisattva‘s spirit in Buddhism.
There are many
causes that we are prepared to sacrifice for such as our country
or for a higher ideal but no cause that we are prepared to kill
for living being.
These are the
principals of “non-violent resistance” of Gandhi.
There are many
lessons from the past until now in world history that many
dictators have “be well-trained army”, brave generals,
excellent war facilities, modern mass destructive and dreadful
weapons. However at last, they were submitted and defeated by
the struggle of the people who have courageously and solidly
protested with non-violent resistance.
Gandhi has greatly
succeeded to liberate India from the imperialism of Great
Britain.
India has become an
independent, peaceful and prosperous country.
The non-violent
resistance of Buddhism has succeeded.
B-
BODDHISATTVA THICH QUANG DUC (1897 – 1963)
On 11-06-1963 Thich
Quang Duc self-immolated to request for freedom, equality of
religious and peace for Vietnam at the intersection of Phan Dinh
Phung street and Le Van Duyet street in Saigon city.
The next day most
all communication organisations and newspapers in Europe,
America and the whole world announced surprisedly and
respectably about that great incident.
According to the
researching papers of the Missouri State University in U.S.A.
that:
“The first of this
death occurred at a busy downtown intersection in Saigon, on 11
June 1963, and was widely reported in American newspapers the
following day, although the New York Times, along with many
other newspapers, declined to print Malcolm Browne's famous, or
rather infamous, photograph of the lone monk burning (Moeller
1989: 404). The monk, seventy-three-year-old Thich Quang Duc,
sat at a busy downtown intersection and had gasoline poured over
him by two fellow monks. As a large crowd of Buddhists and
reporters watched, he lit a match and, over the course of a few
moments, burned to death while he remained seated in the lotus
position. In the words of' David Halberstam, who was at that
time filing daily reports on the war with the New York Times,
I was to see that
sight again, but once was enough. Flames were coming from a
human being; his body was slowly withering and shrivelling up,
his head blackening and charring. In the air was the smell of
burning flesh; human beings burn surprisingly quickly. Behind me
I could hear the sobbing of the Vietnamese who were now
gathering. I was too shocked to cry, too confused to take notes
or ask questions, too bewildered to even think.... As he burned
he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward
composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him.
(1965: 211)
After his funeral,
where his remains were finally reduced to ashes, Quang Duc's
heart, which had not burned, was retrieved, enshrined, and
treated as a sacred relic (Schecter 1967: 179). “
After this great
incident happened, Mr Vu Hoang Chuong, the most famous poet, in
Vietnam, wrote in his poem “The Compassion Fire” :
“
FIRE !
Fire burns reaching
the Lotus Throne
The bodies and minds
from many directions were transformed into poetry, and then they
all go down on their knees
Two shining halos
have tears welling up
Eastern and western
people exhausted, cry worried tears
Joining hands
together towards the new sun rise
The brilliant,
yellow religion is shining and rising
Oh! It’s true. Today
the sun is present
It’s the magnificent
time of the brilliant, yellow religion
Immense amounts of
anger and foolishness disappear
The people have
their eyes opened
They look one
another, brotherhood is immense.”
It is clear that the
ignorance, the anger and the foolishness have disappeared by his
compassion and wisdom lights. Ignorance, anger and foolishness
have been discarded with an immense brotherhood’s flower that
is blooming under the halo of Buddhas.
Verses from “The
Self-immolation poem” of Thich Quang Duc:
“Today I wish to
self- immolate
Becoming the light
to enlighten the ignorances”.
He self-immolated
his body becoming the light to illuminate the ignorances of
mankind. These ignorances are the source of Birth, Death,
deepest passion, wars, hatred, terrorism, and the era’s
devilish-plots. If the ignorance was illuminated, Itself will
disappear. The suffering will be gone and the humans will be
happiness forever.
After his
self-immolation, many millions of people in the world have
responded to his non-violent resistance; They have fought for
peace in Vietnam at that time.
As a result, all
foreign armies have withdrawn from Vietnam and Vietnam has
become a peaceful and reunited country in 1976. At the same
time, with the non-violent resistance of Thich Quang Duc, many
people in many countries around the world have successfully
struggled and gained good results as they intended.
Thus the non-violent
resistance of Buddhism was and still is activating as the main
and decisive guideline to struggle for peace of humanity.
II- THE
OPPORTUNITIES
A-THE DALAI
LAMA IS THE SYMBOL OF COMPASSIONATE AND TOLERANT SPIRIT IN
BUDDHISM
The Dalai Lama left
Tibet in 1959 and went to India. Then He travelled around the
world to preach Buddhism. He let billions of people interested
to learn and practice Buddhism. People living in western
countries are especially interested about Buddhism.
According to the
researching papers of professor Eric Sharp of Sydney University
in Australia that there are a few numbers of Saints of the
world in the 20th century. Mahatma Gandhi is one and
another is The Dalai Lama.
“The
Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the
1989 Nobel Peace Prize to the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso,
the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people.
”The Committee wants to emphasize the fact that the Dalai Lama
in his struggle for the liberation of Tibet consistently has
opposed the use of violence. He has instead advocated peaceful
solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to
preserve the historical and cultural heritage of his people.”
“The 14th Dalai Lama's
Acceptance Speech, on the occasion of the award of the Nobel
Peace Prize in Oslo, December 10, 1989
“I believe the prize is a
recognition of the true values of altruism, love, compassion and
nonviolence which I try to practice, in accordance with the
teachings of the Buddha.
“The
prize reaffirms our conviction that with truth, courage and
determination as our weapons, Tibet will be liberated.”
At the present time,
most people in the world respect The Dalai Lama as the highest
spirit leader of Buddhism. He makes a great merit for peace of
mankind. On the forum of The United Nations Organisation, He
has always requested all superpowerful countries to destroy all
atomic weapons and mass destruction weapons. All countries have
to implement reconcilement and harmony within races and
religions to establish eternal peace and perfect happiness for
the whole of mankind.
With the opportunity
that Buddhism has The Dalai Lama who was respected as a living
Buddha by most people in the world not only Buddhists,
Buddhism-followers, but people with different religions and
others races, all respect him. Therefore his non-violent
resistance for peace and harmony is getting very good results.
B- THE UNITED
NATIONS ORGANISATION HAS OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED THE BUDDHA’S
BIRTH DAY AND THIS ORGANIZATION HAS DECIDED TO ORGANIZE THE
BIRTH DAY CEREMONY EVERY YEAR
In 1999, the
ambassador of Sri-Lanka was supported by 20 Ambassadors of 20
countries, they appealed to the general assembly of The United
Nations Organisation to recognize officially the Buddha’ s Birth
Day.
After that, this
organisation had officially recognized the Buddha’ s Birth Day
respecting as a great incident of the world. This organisation
had also decided to organize The Birth Day ceremony every year
since 1999.
Since 2004 until
this year (2006) the Thailand government has appealed to this
organisation to organize The Birth Day ceremony every year in
Thailand. This government has also hoped that the ceremony would
continue every year in Thailand.
It means Buddhism
was and is becoming a very important religion for mankind.
Buddha’s teachings have compassion, tolerance and a non-violent
spirit, living together in harmony among the countries with
non-discrimination between races, religions, skin colours and
sexes.
The non-violent
spirit, compassion and tolerance of Buddhism are the most
important practicing methods for the mind to exterminate
effectively the roots of wars and terrorism.
C- THE GREAT
PERSONS and THE LEADING CONGREGATIONS OF BUDDHISM
(they are the
most famous persons and organisations, having great merit to
spread Buddhism around the world)
* Zen master
Thich Nhat Hanh
Minister Martin
Luther King Jr. nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for a candidate of The
Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. Because He had especially admired the
written books and the merit of non-violent resistance of Thich
Nhat Hanh for the peace of Vietnam at that time.
Martin Luther King
Jr. was a very famous person in the world, who had struggled for
human rights in America. He had admired Thich Nhat Hanh that: “I
know of no one more worthy … than this gentle monk from
Vietnam.”
Thich Nhat Hanh has
always travelled around the world to preach Buddhism. He has
usually lectured about the meditation methods as practicing
mindfulness and grasps thoroughly respiration. He has written
and published many famous books about Buddhism.
Mr. Paul William (a
very famous writer in USA), introduced the most famous 40 books
in XX century, classified the book OLD PATH WHITE CLOUDS of
Thich Nhat Hanh’s number 12. On 23-05-2006 at Cannes, France,
Thich Nhat Hanh agrees with Dr Bhupendra Kuman Modi (Indian
billionaire) who will pay 120 million dollars to produce the
movie “The life of Sakya Muni Buddha” which was described by the
content of the book “Old Path White Clouds”. The director
Michel Shane (from Hollywood) and relating companies’ staffs ,
actors, actress etc… will start to perform the movie from
11-09-2006 in USA, China, Thailand, Japan and India. This movie
will open to the public in 2008. This will also become the film
to the opening ceremony for the festival of international films
in Cannes, France, in 2008.
He teaches
meditation methods in many centres around the world, and has
established a very large meditation centre called Plum Village
(Lang Mai) in the south of France. This centre is becoming very
famous around the world with millions of people admiring him as
a virtuous, intelligent and extremely talent Vietnamese Buddhist
Monk in the world. He has made a great effort to spread
Vietnamese Buddhism into many western countries. Meanwhile the
war was fiercely continuing in Vietnam when wrote the song:
“Our enemies are not people, but if we kill them off who are we
to live with?”. “ Our enemy named ferociousness. Our enemy
named barbarousness etc…”
These peaceful
messages and humanistic thoughts have deeply and widely affected
Vietnamese society and the world.
Those are actively
campaigning for living and loving together in harmony,
non-discrimination between religions, skin colours and races.
*The most
Venerable Xing Yun (a Chinese monk)
He has established
Buddha’s Light (Fokuangshan) Association in 1967, in Taiwan.
At the present time,
Buddha’s Light International Association, headed by the most
Venerable Hxing Yun, has more than 120 branches around the
world.
Their propagating
Dharma through cultural activities has had great merit in the
world. Millions of people respect, admire and interested to
learn and practice what Buddha taught. The Fokuangshan
monastery, in Taiwan, is the greatest, in advanced and modern
architecture in the world. Because the most advanced and modern
technology science was applied to build this monastery and this
Association has established many similar monasteries around the
world.
In Australia, this
association has built a Nam Thien monastery, on 260,000m2 area,
including a very large main shrine, there are many buildings
around the main shrine with a 9 floors tower, a lotus lake, a
pilgrim lodge, a library, many lecture rooms, a museum, many
meditation rooms, very large international conference hall and
theatre hall and a very large car park etc…This monastery is the
largest, the most advanced and modern complex of its type. At
the present time, this is the greatest monastery in the southern
hemisphere.
The Venerable Master
Hxing Yun has always said: “Buddhism must be modernized,
advanced and lived. Buddhism is not melancholic, sombre, or a
discouraged picture. Buddhism needs youth, and the youth also
need Buddhism.”
He is the one person
who has firstly contributed the great merit to apply the most
advanced and modern technology in all activity fields of
Buddhism today.
*The most
Venerable Xuan Hua (a Chinese monk, 1918-1995)
THE WAN FO SHENG
CHENG MONASTERY was established by Xuan Hua in 1974 in the USA.
His association is well known as the organisation to create the
living medium in harmony and non-discrimination between
religions and races, in many western countries.
This monastery was
constructed on 4, 880,000m2 area, in California, has over 70
tall and modern buildings having enough conveniences for about
20,000 people to live and practice the Buddha’s teachings.
He was applying 6
guideline principles to operate the monastery. Those are:
non-dispute, non-greed, non-seek profits, non-selfishness,
non-seek self-interest and non-lie.
*The Dharma
Master Nikkyo Niwano (a Japanese, 1906-1999)
Nikkyo Niwano has
founded and headed “RISSHO KOSEI-KAI” Japanese lay Buddhist
congregation in Tokyo, Japan. Nikkyo Niwano was a very famous
religious leader. He has the great merit to exercise the peace
for the world in the last decades.
In April 1972, He
was the first Japanese to be elected for the President of
“World Conference on Religion and Peace” . He was also the
leader of many international religious and Japanese religious
organisations. He has exercised his functions to campaign
actively for peace of the world and Vietnam.
Today, Buddhism has
vigorously and quickly spread around the world. People who have
been initiated into Buddhism are increasing to a higher
percentage than other religions.
D- THE WORLD
BUDDHIST SANGHA COUNCIL
In the world today,
there is THE WORLD BUDDHIST SANGHA COUNCIL contacting address
in Taipei, Taiwan. This Council was headed by the sanghas; it
was founded in May 1966 at Colombo, Sri-Lanka. A part of active
guidelines were written: “Approving, supporting all activities
for freedom and peace of the world with the contributions of the
sanghas.”
The Sangha Council
has about 123 branches in 39 countries around the world.
E- THE WORLD
FELLOWSHIP OF BUDDHISTS
WFB was founded on
25-05-1950 in Sri-Lanka. It was leaded by lay Buddhists,
contacting address in Bangkok, Thailand. The activity aim basing
on guidelines are: The second guideline written that: “Closing
firmly the friendship, combining and uniting between the
Buddhism nations.” The fourth guideline: “Organizing,
spreading the Dharma activities into the fields of society,
education and culture.” The fifth guideline: “Bring back the
peace, welfare and happiness for the people in this planet and
readily allying with other associations having the same aim.”
WFB has about 135 branches in 40 countries around the
world.
In 1970, UNESCO of
The United Nations Organisation officially recognized this
non-government organisation becoming a permanent member of the
advisory board of UNESCO in the fields of education, culture,
society according to point of view of Buddhism.
These are two
largest international Buddhism congregations. These are the
largest members, the most power and influential congregations of
international Buddhism today.
Buddhism is applying
modern information technology, advanced mass communication,
printing and the most progressive publication technology into
the propagating Dharma activities.
Buddhism is
respected by the largest religions, billions of people in the
whole world as the even-tempered and non-violent religion.
Buddhism has never provoked wars with other religions.
Those are very good
opportunities for Buddhism to achieve the CHALLENGES. So that
Buddhism can contribute to solve crisis and difficult problems
of the world.
III- THE
CHALLENGES THAT BUDDHISM WAS AND IS ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTING TO
RESOLVE
A- WARS,
TERRORISM AND PEACE
From the past until
the present, there are many kinds of wars as below:
-
Wars
between tribes invading territories, establishing the countries.
-
Wars
disputing the colonies.
-
Wars
disputing the markets.
-
Liberating wars, struggle for independence.
-
Ideology wars, expanding the doctrines.
-
Religious wars.
-
Cold
wars, hot wars, etc…
Wars will not exist
if we love others, respect other life as respect our own life.
Talking widely with people and do not discriminate skin
coulors, races, religions, love each other, respect others lives
as respect our own life. We love other people as love our
father, mother, brothers, and sisters in the same family. We
also love other people as we love our lover, wife, husband, and
children, respect their basic freedom including religious free,
change free the religions. We respect political opinions of
other people, divide equally the benefits which we have and will
be had. We try to resolve the disputes in any fields by the
discussions to find out the roots of natural problems then
solving moderately them with non-violent morale.
It not accepts that
any people or any religion, with the reasons spreading their
influence, expanding the lands, protesting the happiness for
them, can oppress others having to follow their request.
If all of us living
together on this planet respect the above general ideas, so we
can peacefully live without fear wars or terrorism. When the
cause of war and terrorism do not exist, so that atomic weapons
and mass destructive weapons have to be completely abolished.
Because it’s not necessary to keep them. We will eternally live
in the peace.
B- PROTESTING
AGAINST THE ENVIRRONMENT OF THE PLANET
If all of mankind is
concerned that our living planet is our garden, home, perfume,
flower, shade, air and fresh water for drinking every day, so
that we can not forget our responsibility to protest our living
environment.
C-GLOBALIZATION, OVERPOPULATION RESOLVING
Globalization means
we are forming our large family on this planet. Technology
science is highly developing to offer us the conveniences about
modern, advanced and high speed communication. Many fields in
our living and working are becoming more and more comfortable.
Those who are closer
to each other. News, ideas are quickly and accurately informed.
Exchange relations are faster. However all basic human rights
must be absolutely respected. After that the economic benefits
have to divide equally and logically. The overpopulation has
been logically resolved. Because the poor and less developed
countries have a very high birth rate. These countries use
manpower as the main expedients in production. Therefore they
give birth too many children to increase their working power. So
that, overpopulation will occur.
Developed and
developing countries have a responsibility in trying to help
those countries to resolve these problems.
D- THE ROLE OF
THE RELIGIONS
All religions have
the same aim that is to create happiness for people in two
fields of material and mind. Helping people liberate from the
sufferings binding them.
From the past until
now some people are enthusiastically preaching religion. They
counsel everyone that has to practice to liberate from suffering
to achieve happiness. However they have the aim that only
expanding their religion. They want to attract as many as people
to their religion, fighting to get their own land to live, using
violent steps, struggling to establish their own country for
their religion.
Those who decide to
change their religion will be faced with revenge, judged a very
serious penalty and very barbarous consequences. Thus they are
on behalf of protesting and developing their own religion; it
means selfishness for them and robs the freedom of other people.
So that these actions will harm people, let them suffer for a
very long time. Due to these serious circumstances which can
occur heartrending of wars, terrorism, holy wars break out with
the reasons are protesting their religions and opposing their
enemies.
Even since then
religious wars were and are happening continuously and difficult
to stop. Because this group of people think shallowly and lose
the highest aim of religion that they have to help people in
creation of happiness and liberate sufferings!
As pring forward
proves above, Buddhism is a religion using compassion, wisdom
and a non-violent spirit as guidelines to preaching Dharma and
to guide people seeking happiness and living in peace.
Therefore Buddhism always awakes to add up responsibility to
resolve effectively the problems of the new era.
According to
Buddha’s teachings, Buddhists always love and respect the life
of all beings. With Bodhisattva spirit, Buddhists forget
oneself, seeking methods to create happiness for mankind, love
same race and combine, to help people to liberate from
sufferings. History has proved that Buddhists were and are
creating peace and prosperity for all humanity, absolutely do
not provoke war, terrorism, destroy the living environment or
invade any territory to establish a country for Buddhists.
When Buddhists go to
any countries, they live peacefully, harmoniously, charitably
and share weal and woe with other people. Buddhists also live
tolerantly with other religions and their followers when they
are coming and living in Buddhism countries.
Because of the
written reasons above, Buddhism was and is actively and
effectively resolves difficult problems of THE NEW ERA.
IV-
PROPOSITIONS
Taking advantage of
the opportunities, that the Buddhist society have been given to
address the challenges within this modern society, we present to
you the following suggestions.
1-Organise a
day for Multicultural Celebration of Peaceful and Harmonious
living.
Buddhists who are
living in their countries, have to campaign, choose and organise
a day for Multicultural Celebration of Peaceful and Harmonious
living.
Each ethnic
community to participate in sections of literature, arts and
perform their special cultures to create a favourable
environment to other ethnics and religions, to excite join
together in sympathy, to conciliate disputes, to live together
in peace and harmony.
Organise
conferences, forums, exchange culture relations, get to know
customs of other communities living in the same country and
perform all sections having necessary contents for the solidary
spirit in society.
In Australia, there
is the harmony day organising on 21 March each year with very
good results. Therefore Australia avoids race and religious
discriminations, also bad actions can cause catastrophe,
terrorism and wars.
2- Establish a
United Religion Representative Committee, composed of
representatives from all religions. And to have a committee set
up in each country as well as an internationally combined one.
* Buddhists campaign
to form the committee, organise religious conference (every 2
years) in each member country to discuss and exchange opinions
to find out different points of views between religions and
races. Summarize all opinions, bring forward means to conciliate
any conflicts within religions and races, or any different
standpoints of government about religions.
* Establish the
committee of International Religions, organise international
conference (every 4 years) of representative religions from
member countries around the world, discuss the themes (subjects)
relating to urgent problems that need to be addressed.
* Find out the same
and different viewpoints within religions and races, offer
directions to resolve the maters.
* Summarize all
opinions and solve plans, then send them to relating governments
and The United Nations Organisation.
The aim is to
communicate, conciliate, concord, respect, understand
aspirations, sympathy, and living in harmony to create peace and
flourishing for humanity.
The Communitee of
International religions should send a delegation to any area of
conflict in the world to find out measures to reconcile
conflicts in respective spirit of each other.
3- Establish a
United Religion Representative Committee quarterly magazine,
within each country.
Publish the magazine
in each member country. Every religion should send a member to
the editor board of the magazine and publish every quarter.
Every religion should write for the magazine about any fields of
their own religion in any topics.
4- Organise a
day for the creation of positive ways of life and for the
surrounding environment.
Choose an
appropriate day in the year, mobilize as many people to
participate, clean seashore, river, park, road etc… and plant
trees, flowers, on appropriate places to create a good living
environment.
The United religion
committee in each member country should mobilize public to
participate actively in these activities.
5- Organise a
festival for young Buddhists within each country and
internationally.
In each country,
Buddhism should organise a festival for young Buddhists (every 2
years). In the world and call upon international Buddhists
Congregations linking together to organise a festival fixed
period (every 4 years), rotate for each country.
On 13 April 2006 at
Hang Zhou, China, an international conference took place about
the theme: “A Harmony World Commencing From The Mind”. There
were over a thousand people including monks, nuns, professors,
Ph.D., specialists etc… from over 30 countries who attended. The
conference closed at Zhou Shan (close to Hang Zhou) on 16 April
2006.
This is the biggest
international religious conference after the Chinese Communist
Party had taken power in China.
6- Establish
“The Vietnamese Buddhist Federal Congregation” in Viet Nam.
In the world, there
are “The World Buddhist Sangha Council” headed by Sanghas and
“The World Fellowship of Buddhists” headed by Lay Buddhists.
In each country, we
should follow those organisations as well. Thus Buddhism can
mobilize energies into many fields including politics. The aim
is to group all Buddhists (especially Lay Buddhists) to support
capacity Buddhists to participate in all fields of the country
including establishing a politic party in culture and viewpoint
of Buddhism.
In the case of
Vietnam, they should accept the real situation that there are
two Buddhist congregations: “The Vietnamese Buddhist
Congregation” and “The Unified Vietnamese Buddhist
Congregation”. These are headed by Sang has. Therefore, Lay
Buddhists have to join power together to establish “The
Vietnamese Buddhist Fellowship Congregation” which to be headed
and operated by Lay Buddhists.
Because, if all
Vietnamese Buddhist Congregations are only headed and operated
by Sanghas; then Lay Buddhists will become negatively, depend
passively on Sanghas, can not develop their capacities. Further,
there are many fields that only Lay Buddhists can participate
and work actively. Monks and nuns were limited by Buddhism
disciplines of pure Sangha, can not participate in many fields
of society.
After that, all
three Congregations should join together to establish “THE
VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST FEDERAL CONGREGATION “. This Congregation
only advises and gives opinions to compromise discord within
three Congregations. The decisions do not force the parties
which must submit to execute. Because if the disputes occur
seriously within the parties, they can appeal to the court.
7-Establish a
Buddhist political party in countries that have large
populations of residing Buddhists.
In the country
residing majority Buddhist followers: Buddhists should exercise
to establish a political party to concentrate able people to
participate in national politics. They will create opportunities
to reflect truthfully aspirations of majority people to
contribute effectively to establish a good living environment,
conciliate, concord within groups of races, religions, and
different political opinions, construct an excellent surrounding
to live harmony and peace, exterminate divide reasons, discords
and misapprehend which will be become causes occurring of
discrimination, war and terrorism.
In Japan, there is
the Buddhist party, Komei party (Komeito in Japanese)
established in 1964. At the present time, this party is
classified third, next to Liberal party (in power) and social
party.
8-Establish an
official Buddhist charity organisation in every country as well
as an international combined organisation.
Through the
activities of these organisations, sanghas and Lay Buddhist have
many occasions to approach poor people in all areas, from cities
to countrysides, from flat fields to mountains. People who live
in areas far from civilization of mankind. Buddhists bring
compassion and necessary requirements for people who are needing
our aids about mind and materials, and help them to liberate
from sufferings and create happiness.
9-Establish
more Buddhist universities as well as Buddhist high school and
primary school in Viet Nam.
A-To establish
a canvass committee for the contruction of three more Buddhist
universities in Vietnam.:
-
Buddhist
University in Can Tho
-
Buddhist
University in Hue
-
Buddhist
University in Hanoi
In the near future,
Buddhist has to construct three more universities as mentioned
above. At the present time, Buddhists are building Van Hanh
University. However according to the requirement of education
and spreading Dharma into all Vietnamese stratums, it will
create happiness, progress and civilization for people.
In the case of
Japan, many public universities such as Tokyo university, Kyoto
university etc… there is the faculty of Buddhism. Beyond, each
Buddhist Sect has the University for their own. Many developed
countries organise similarly education as in Japan.
Wishing all
Vietnamese Buddhist organisations and Buddhists around the world
should gladly support these projects.
B- Campaign to
rebuild Buddhist high school and primary school
Education or any
other fields of society also need to have oppositional
composition to complete with each other taking the balance to
develop totally and to gain excellent results, thus avoiding
monopoly, despondency or degenerate.
In the educational
field which also has to have public and private schools. Both
must be free contended with each other, and then can be
perfectly and firmly developed.
In the teaching
programs of years 10, 11, and 12, they should teach psychology,
seeking and choosing fiancé and fiancée’s methods, experiences,
steps preparing to marry, living and responsibility of wife and
husband, experiences and methods of nurture and education for
children etc…They should teach how to live in harmony, create
happiness and a prosperous family.
Therefore, Buddhists
should canvass to re-construct Buddhist high school and primary
schools.
10-Consult and
carry out the needs and wishes of Buddhists.
-
Choose experts
to obtain informations, summarize the needs, initiatives,
opinions to develop Vietnamese Buddhism (in and outside the
country) in the new era, and then bring forward the reports
of guideline to practice.
-
Measure the
greatness, direction of preaching Dharma, address of monks
and nuns towards Lay Buddhists and non-religious followers
to avoid the public defecting from pagodas.
-
Organise the
class to train the abbots, teach common psychology, mob
psychology, psychiatry, family living counsel, comparative
religions etc…
-
In each country,
Vietnamese Buddhist congregations should examine practicing
Dharma methods of monks and nuns which create eccentric
implementation, see those matching or not the Buddha’s
teachings, create welfare, liberation and enlightenment for
practicing people or not.
-
Because there
are many practicing methods which only attach special
importance to formality, people are becoming very
intolerant.
-
These
circumstances let the public and other religions followers
who do not have sympathy about Buddhism.
-
Further, because
of this strangeness that causes obstacles for the spread of
Buddhism.
-
Advise about
educational methods for children inside family according to
the spirit of Buddhism.
-
Advice how to
create happiness for new married persons, conciliate
disaccords in Lay Buddhist family, contribute and create
comforts belong to Buddhism.
-
Each Buddhist
congregations in each country should also organise the class
to teach psychology for men and women before they marry,
living family to nourish, and educate children etc…
-
The Lord
Buddha’s Birth Day and Ullambana ceremonies, in every year,
should organise in a large park or stadium in the city or
countryside to perform many sections such as exhibit
animals, agricultural produces, magician, movies etc… and as
many games for the many classes of public to participate
together. These are very good opportunities for the public
who can approach with Buddhists activities. They can begin
to know Buddhism, to learn and pratise the teachings of
Buddhas.
V- CONCLUSION
Due to summarize
main ideas in this paper and emphasize pre-eminent Dharma of
Buddhism which can apply in the new era. I want to rewrite
Buddha‘s teaching that: Once upon the time, a disciple asked:
“Is The Lord Buddha The God (The Creator)? The Lord Buddha
said: “No”. Asked: “Is The Saint?” . Answered: “No”. Asked:
“So, who is The Lord Buddha ?”. Answered: “I’m the man
enlightened”.
In these questions
and answers, we know that: “The Lord Buddha is the unlimited
light, and having immense compassion, wishes to guide all living
beings liberating from sufferings to create welfare and
happiness, emancipate and enlighten.
The Lord Buddha
always teaches that : “My Dharma is not any more different than
teaching about life’s suffering, then the method to exterminate
the suffering”.
Therefore, the
Buddha’s teaching is very practical and scientific, always
relating to life and the development in two aspects which are:
1)- The material to satisfy the needs of an ordinary life. 2)-
The mind which is the main factor to guide us always ascend,
attain the truth, liberate bondages and sufferings.
When nearing the day
to Nirvãna, The Lord Buddha taught us through Anan: “Hi Anan!
Light torch for yourself, find refugee in yourself. Do not seek
refugee any where outside. Hold tightly the truth as the light
will illuminate you. Hold tightly the truth as this is the place
where you will find to refugee for yourself. Advance forward to
self-liberate”.
If we can be put
aside selfishness and greed, and be able to move towards a way
of life with unity, equity and equality, following the mentality
of humility, compassion, tolerance, wisdom and non-atman
(non-self), like the Buddha’s teaching, then we will no longer
have to fear the calamities of war, terrorism, or atomic weapons
and humanity will always live in harmony and peace.
